ReplyDeleteI think a student needs to be fluent in communicating. In our line of work communication is extremely important, if a kid doesn't have a useful communication system how are we to know that what we are doing is working, not working, boring, fun, etc. If a student has some form of communication but isn't fluent in it, not always getting their point across or understanding you then they are not fluent. A subskill would be a language whether that be sign language or gestures, they need to have some form of language that you both can understand. This skill needs to be fluent because it could be life or death, which is scary! If a student has no communication system how can you know that something is hurt them, or something worse. How can you know that something is caught in a kids throat if they have no gag reflex and don't know to cough or can't cough? I think if a student isn't fluent in communication that it could cause all kinds of problems, that I don't even want to bother to think about! We definitely need to help our kids become fluent in communicating with us and other adults around them in their lives!
ReplyDeleteStudents need to be fluent in multiplying single digit numbers. Before a student can be fluent in math, he must be able to decode and identify numbers. In students are unable to recognize the number, it will be impossible to multiply it with another number. Students must also be fluent in arithmetic. If you are trying to explain to a student that 2 times 2 is the same as 2 plus 2, they need to know off the top of their head what 2 plus 2 is without doing any calculations. Students need to me fluent in multiplying because it is foundational for doing more advanced math, like algebra. Students must also be fluent in multiplication if they are to understand its opposite, division. It is also useful in everyday life. If a student is not fluent in this skill, their ability to problem-solve becomes severely limited. They will be unable to do math in higher grade levels. They will also have limitations on how well they can live in the world. In many jobs and careers, multiplication is necessary.
ReplyDeleteI think that K-12 students need to be fluent in their phonemic skills. Phonics are the foundation of learning to read. Does anyone ever remember "Hooked on Phonics"? I don't think that are parents/guardians would have put such an emphasis on this if they didn't feel it was crucial for our future! Just think for a moment, what if I never learned the alphabet, what if I never learned which sound belongs to which letter, or how to a form my mouth to say such sounds? Our reading, communication, writing, and speech could all be affected by a lack of fluency in phonics. This is why I chose an app that allows students to practice and learn sight words by combining sound, touch, and sight. If students are not fluent in this basic skill of reading other limitations would be apparent in their education.
ReplyDeleteA skill that K-12 needs to know is site words. This is essential to functioning in their everyday life. Sub skills students need to know are what colors and shapes words are associated with. For example, GO is associated with the color green. STOP is associated with the color red and the octagon shape. This skill is important to be fluent in for basic signs. If the child needs to use the restroom, they need to know the difference between BOY and GIRL. If the child is not fluent with site words they could get mixed up with words like NAME and DATE. ReplyDeleteFor a student in K-12, a student needs to be fluent in letter and word recognition. In order for fluency to occur in this matter, the student needs to have a foundational knowledge of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of the language they are trying to be fluent in. These three components of studying the language allow the student to recognize the sound of the letter and associate that sound to a particular letter. This is important because this allows the student to recognize certain letters when hearing verbal language. Morphology and syntax allow the student to start placing the letters together and recognize the meaning of the letters when placed in a particular sequence, making a word. This skill is a necessary skill because if a student grows up not knowing their letters or recognizing words, a student can have a very difficult time learning a language and speaking it when they get older.
